Strong opener for Lloyd in USF2000 After setting fastest time in qualifying for the opening round of the 2016 Cooper Tires USF2000 Championship Powered by Mazda, Australian Jordan Lloyd went on to win the first of two races at the St Petersburg street circuit in Florida, USA. He then went on to finish second to his team mate Yufeng Luo in the second race of the weekend on the challenging 1.8-mile, 14-turn circuit. A multi-car incident at the first corner led to the first six laps being run behind the Safety Car, whereupon another incident at the restart caused another lengthy full-course caution. When the race finally began in earnest with 11 laps already in the books, pole-sitter Lloyd maintained his advantage to lead from Luo and Robert Megennis, who had avoided all the carnage and vaulted all the way from ninth on the starting grid. Lloyd, who competed at St. Petersburg last year before returning to his native Australia to win his nationâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s inaugural CAMS Formula 4 Championship, quickly made his escape and secured an

impressive victory, 1.553 seconds clear of teammate Luo at the finish. Lloyd looked well on his way to a double celebration when he took control of the second race, until the advent of another full-course caution negated his 3.3-second lead after 15 laps. A hectic restart saw Canadian Parker Thompson (Cape Motorsports) grasp the lead with an opportunistic manoeuvre in Turn Two, but his advantage lasted only a couple of corners before Luo seized the upper hand. The Cooper Tires USF2000 Championship Powered by Mazda will resume at Barber Motorsports Park in Birmingham, Ala., for two more races on April 22-24 before heading to Indianapolis and two further rounds in May.

Unscheduled start to IndyCar Series for Power After setting the fastest lap in qualifying for the opening round of the 2016 Verizon IndyCar Series, Australian Will Power had to sit out the Firestone Grand Prix of St Petersburg due to effects from an inner-ear infection that prompted concussion-like symptoms including nausea, headaches and neck stiffness. It was only after a thorough battery of tests the day after the race that Power was determined not to have sustained a concussion.

Power was involved in a one-car crash during morning practice in St. Petersburg on March 11. He was evaluated at the scene, under INDYCAR protocol, and was cleared to drive by INDYCAR Medical Director Dr. Geoffrey Billows after showing no concussion-like symptoms. Power experienced severe nausea on March 12 following Firestone Fast Six qualifications - where he claimed the Verizon

P1 Award and broke the St. Petersburg track record. He was required to submit to an examination by INDYCAR Medical on March 13, where he failed a SCAT (Sports Concussion Assessment Tool) and was presumed to have been suffering from concussion-like symptoms. He was replaced in the Team Penske No. 12 Chevrolet by Oriol Servia for the morning warmup practice and the race. Later in the month Power was back in action in the second round of the IndyCar Series at the Phoenix International Raceway where he placed third in Desert Diamond West Valley Phoenix Grand Prix.

Top Australian and Kiwi drifters go head to head For the first time ever, New Zealand and Australia’s best drivers went head to head on the daunting concrete-lined drift course at Pukekohe Raceway in Auckland, New Zealand, at ANZAC weekend. With speeds reaching over 200 kilometres an hour for the final round of the inaugural Hi-Tec Oils Trans-Tasman Drift Championship, a four event series that saw eight Australian’s and eight Kiwi’s compete at Winton Raceway and Sydney Motorsport Park late last year. The Trans-Tasman competition is currently led by Sydney based Rob Arbolino (Nissan S14 Silvia) followed closely by New Zealand Drifting icon Daniel “Fanga Dan” Woolhouse

Arbolino recently won Round 3 of the Trans-Tasman Drift Series held in Christchurch, and is looking forward to his Pukekohe debut. “From what I've heard Pukekohe requires big commitment, but I'm sure us Aussies have what it takes to be competitive. Coming to New Zealand in the lead of Trans-Tasman I knew I had to have myself and my car 100% in order to maintain my lead in the points. D1NZ hosted one of best drift events I’ve been to and the drivers and teams were awesome. Team Australia worked together and what a better way to end Christchurch with three Aussies in the semi-finals and myself winning the final battle heading into Pukekohe.”

Mazda Road to Indy to continue The Mazda Road to Indy has given Australian single seater drivers the opportunity to head to the USA and take part in a Scholarship Shootout event with the winner receiving a $USD200,000 scholarship to race in the Cooper Tires USF2000 powered by Mazda series. Already two years into a three-year agreement, an alliance between the Australian Formula Ford Series and the world renowned Mazda Road to Indy ladder system in the US has been extended by a further two years beyond 2017.

As the recognised pathway to race Indy cars, the Mazda Road to Indy ladder system rewards category champions with a scholarship to progress to the next level of racing in the ladder. Drivers begin the Mazda Road to Indy in the Cooper Tires USF2000 Championship Powered by Mazda. From there, drivers move on to the Pro Mazda Championship

Presented by Cooper Tires, formerly known as the Star Mazda Championship. The third step is the Indy Lights Presented by Cooper Tires. Indy Lights is regarded as a step below the Verizon IndyCar Series.

This season, two Australians in Jordan Lloyd and Anthony Martin are contesting the USF2000 series, both of whom have Formula Ford experience with Jordan placing 2nd in the 2014 Australian Series and Anthony the 2013 West Australian Series champion. Australians have proven their ability in the series with Mathew Brabham winning the 2012 championship and progressing up the ladder to now have the opportunity to race in the 2016 Indianapolis 500. With the six round 2016 Australian Formula Ford Series kicking off in April, the series is set for another big year.

Toyota 86 Series 2016 It’s already Australia’s best-selling sports car, designed to deliver the type of dynamic response and driver engagement normally reserved for the race track.

“Drivers of all ages will benefit from the driveability we’ve added through the exhaust and ECU tune, at the same time developing their set-up skills with the adjustable coil-overs,” he said.

So it’s a natural progression for Toyota Australia to establish the Toyota 86 Racing Series, an affordable, grassroots motorsport series open to manual variants of Toyota’s cultclassic sports car.

In addition to the mandatory kit, competition cars must be fitted with a Toyota 86 Racing Series compliant roll-cage and CAMS-compliant race seat and multi-point harness, which competitors are free to source independently.

Sanctioned by the Confederation of Australian Motor Sport (CAMS), the 2016 series will run as part of the support program at selected rounds of the Australian V8 Supercars Championship*.

Taking all that into account, even if a competitor chooses a new 86 GT at $29,990** as their base vehicle, a track-ready car, complete with race rubber and initial entry fee, could be on the grid in 2016 for less than $70,000.

Toyota ambassador and four times Australian Rally Champion Neal Bates has worked with a range of specialists to develop a high-performance, low-cost mandatory race package that is designed to be affordable, fast and durable.

The entry fee of $1,500 per round (including Bathurst), is the lowest for any mainstream national series, and a prize pool of $125,000 will give up-and-coming competitors a solid career boost.

It includes an adjustable front and rear coil-over damping system built and tuned by Queensland-based MCA, owned and run by motorsport legend and suspension guru Murray Coote.

Speaking of up-and-coming competitors, Aaron Seton, son of V8 Supercars Hall of Fame inductee Glenn and grandson of 1965 Bathurst winner Barry, was the first entrant to confirm their participation as entries for the 2016 season opened in February.

Brakes are upgraded with larger rotors (330mm front / 316mm rear) and AP Racing callipers (four-piston front / two-piston rear), while the wheels step up to 18-inch OZ ‘Asfalto’ alloy rims. The exhaust system is custom made from manifold to tailpipe, a Toyota Racing Development (TRD) engine oil cooler has been added, and a specific locked Motec M150 Electronic Control Unit (ECU) is able to be swapped from car to car, ensuring parity on engine management. A modified throttle stop, specific rear spoiler and baffled sump pan complete the list of required NBM elements. “In fine-tuning the 86 race package we’ve aimed for a balance between performance, tune-ability and budget,” Neal Bates said.

Determined to extend the Seton motor racing dynasty into a third generation, the 17-year old young-gun stepped up from karts in 2014, and has since made his mark in GT and production car competition. Bearing one of the most famous names in Australian motorsport, he says he is eager to further his progress in a series designed to encourage and support emerging talent. With sponsorship support from Sci-Fleet Hino, plus his famous father overseeing the build and on-going development of his car, not to mention managing test and race operations, Aaron is off to a flying start. “I’ve got a lot to live up to, with dad and pop’s success,” Aaron said.

“But heading into this series, I see their experience and support as a big advantage, and I’m keen to make them proud,” he said. Clearly, Aaron won’t be short of mentoring and tips from a pro (or two), but to assist other competitors with their sights on moving to national level motorsport, Toyota is adding selected professional racers to the starting line-up, with different drivers brought in throughout the season. These nominated drivers are not eligible for prizemoney; their primary role being to mentor regular competitors by sharing tips on everything from race-craft and driving technique to engineering set-up and team structure. The series is managed by AirTime Autosport under the leadership of prominent motorsport identity Neil Crompton, and according to the company’s general manager Phil Harrison expressions of interest have been regular and genuine. “We’ve received entries from a range of people, from aspiring racers still in high school, to established motorsport operations looking to use the Toyota 86 Racing Series as a stepping stone in their driver development programs,” Mr Harrison said. And the Toyota 86 Racing Series hasn’t just captured the imagination of emerging drivers. Commercial support has been building steadily in the lead up to the first round. Swift for Japanese Formula Nippon, along with the 570bhp 5.0 litre V8 engine, will be built in Australia. Chassis, engine, gearbox, wheels, brakes, tyres and shock absorbers will be one-make with the overall car specification frozen for a minimum of four years to control costs. The project has been two years in behind-the scenes research, planning and early development, but now a prototype car, based in Melbourne, is just a few weeks away from initial on-track testing. The plan is to run a seven round series throughout NZ and Australia over the DecemberJanuary period.

The FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) has kicked off the 2016 season with the official Prologue.
